Homework Help and Screen Readers

Updated on

Examples of issues:

1. Columns

Screen reader can't read items in order because it reads all of first column before going to the next column.

Example #1

Example #2

One work around is to remove the columns.  Be sure to put the parts in the correct order.  To view the original homework help go to homeworkadmin.cpm.org.

If the homework is getting too long, the Answer or parts that come next can be put in the next column. If a lot of scrolling is required to work through the help, consider two columns.  Keep in mind that the screen reader will read all the items in the first column before going to the next column.

Example #1: All items in order with no columns.

Example #2: Two columns with answers on the right.

The reader will read; Hint, More Help, and then move to the next column for the Answer.  Next, the reader will go to the next column container and read More Help. Finally the reader will move to the second Answer in the last column.

Sometimes the reader will move from finishing the first column container back to the start of the problem instead of continuing on to the next column container.  For this reason it may be best to use this format (Example #2) as a second choice and only if the help is very long.

2. Shading

The colors designated for Hints, Steps, Answers, eTools and Other are now shown in homework help as textured bars to the left of checkboxes.

Two colors, highlighter yellow and gray have been left as background colors.  Be sure to use the colors appropriately in C3PO for the desired results in homework help.
