Google Drive 'Open with' for Microsoft Office

This article provides directions on how to make sure the 'Open with' gives Microsoft Office program options.

1. Check to see if the Google Drive Sync app is installed and running.

If you do not have the app, you can download it here: https://www.google.com/drive/

The 'Open with' option for Microsoft Office products will only work if Google Drive Sync app is installed on your computer and is running. The files also need to be synchronized to your local drive. Set your Google Drive Sync to start on system startup to help ensure it will be running when you need it.

  1. Right click the Google Drive icon in your task bar.  
  2. Click the three vertical dots. They will be in the upper right of the pop out.
  3. Click 'Preferences'.

2. Check that your Sync Options are set appropriately.

  1. Choose the Sync option desired.
  2. Any Microsoft Office files Shared with you need to be dragged to your Google Drive on the web.
  3. If you make changes, hit 'Apply'.

Note: Only Sync-ed files will have Microsoft Options in 'Open With'.

3. Set your Advanced Preferences.

  1. Next click Advanced.
  2. Make sure the boxes are checked in the System settings.  
  3. Again, if you make changes click Apply.

4. You will need to have the extension 'Application Launcher for Drive (by Google)'.

In order to have the 'Open with' option in Google drive on Chrome you will need to have the extension 'Application Launcher for Drive (by Google)'.

First check your Chrome browser to see if you have the extension.  

1. Go to the 3 vertical dots on the top right corner of the browser.

2. Go to More Tools and another menu will pop out.

3. Pick Extensions.

You will need to have the extension 'Application Launcher for Drive (by Google)'.

5. Final View

You will see a list of your current extensions.

  • Scroll through the list to see if you have 'Application Launcher for Drive (by Google)'.
  • Make sure it is enabled.  If you do and it is enabled, you are done!  
  • If you don't, you will need to update your Google Drive.
  • You can download and install Google Drive from https://www.google.com/drive/ . This will update your drive.
