The following are directions for setting up the Virtual eBook. I recommend you watch Andrew's video showing the process before installing at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gssWR23MtJY
Below you will find additional hurdles you may encounter that were not in the video because Andrew had previously opened the files and the prompts were no longer available for him while recording. I recommend running and pausing the video as you install. When you reach a hurdle not mentioned in his video, check the appropriate section below for additional tips.
1.1. Obtain a link to the two files needed for this process.
1.2. Double click each file. They take about 5 minutes each to download. For me, the files went to my downloads folder.
- You may get a warning that these files are too big such as the one below.
- Click 'Download Anyway'.
1.3. Move the files to your desktop or in a specific place within a folder.
- Double click the file name.
- Follow the prompts.
2.1. You will finally get the Fusion app. Open it by double clicking to install.
2.2. Choose the trial version if you do not have a code/key.
2.3. Select the Installation Disk: (Or not since this is not needed.)
- You do not need to do this step.
- VMware Fusion is already installed.
- If you double click the install file again and it says you are running a copy of it, it is proof that VMware Fusion is already running.
- Click 'Cancel'.
2.4. You may need to do the following:
- Go to the system preferences.
- Click Security and Privacy.
- Under the General tab, click 'allow' as in the image below.
- If it is not there, ignore! (It was not there for me!)
3.1. Double click the file: EbooksDemo.tar.bz2
- This will take 10 minutes or so to extract.
- You will get a folder called Virtual Machines with two files:
- Ebooks Demo.command
- Ebooks Demo.vmwarevm
3.2. Double click: Ebooks Demo.vmwarevm
- You may get a notice asking if you moved or copied the virtual machine. Click "I Copied it".
- The files will then unpack to a black screen.
- At the login, do nothing. Wait about 4 minutes to hit enter.
3.3. Go back to the Virtual Machine folder and double click: Ebooks Demo.command
Note: You may get a notice that "Ebooks Demo.command" was blocked from opening because it is not from an identified developer. Open it anyway.
3.4. If all goes well, you will get the following screen.
- Type 'yes'.
- You should be able to now open the Virtual eBooks
- If not, repeat the steps in this section again.
3.5. Wait:
- If you do not wait long enough, you will get an error like the one below.
- Wait 2 more minutes.
- If so, double click the "Ebooks Demo.command" and run it again.
4.1. Get the VMware Fusion screen up
Do this by:
- You will see the icon running in your dock. Click on it.
- A black screen will show with the VMware Fusion bar at the top.
4.2. Quit VMware Fusion
- Go to the top bar: Format --> Shut Down.
- Click 'Shut down' again.
- At the top menu bar,
5.1. Double click the file: Ebooks Demo.vmwarevm
- Once you double click it, it will restore the virtual machine state.
- Wait until you get 'ebooks login:' on the black screen.
- Now wait 4 minutes! Check the timer!
5.2. Now double click: Ebooks Demo.command
- If you waited long enough, your virtual eBooks will open quickly.
- Otherwise you will get an error message like below.
- Wait a couple more minutes. Then click the red button to close the screen. Then 'Terminate'.
- Then double click: Ebooks Demo.command again.
5.3. You should now have access to the Virtual eBooks.
Note: If you still can't get back the virtual eBooks, you probably did not close the Virtual Machine properly. Go back and complete step 4 again.
