Mac Disk Utility

This article describes how to use Disk Utility for the Mac. Run Disk Utility once a month to keep your machine running more smoothly.

Find Disk Utility

It is in your Applications --> Utilities

  • Once found, add it to your dock!
  • Run it once a month!

Icons may look like any of the ones below depending on your system.

Find Disk Utility in your Applications --> Utilities
Big Sur (11.2.2) or Later

Once in Disk Utility:

  1. Click "First Aid" at the top.
  2. Click "Run"
Notification Center
Older Mac Systems:
  • Select the Macintosh HD (or your drive's name).
  • Verify Disk .
  • Make any necessary repairs.
  • Verify and Repair Disk Permissions.
