Recovering a Kandji Erased Device

Updated on

Pre-Erase Procedures- Do this First

Before  the device is erased in Kandji, please remove all personal important documents from BOTH your device AND the portable drive you will be using to complete these steps.

1. Backup all documents on your device onto a usb/ portable drive/ online file drive

2. Create a bootable Installer using these instructions from Apple Support at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e2FJ4QY2e7Xymd3KWwU5MVrxd6b2pv06/view?usp=sharing

Note: Downloading the software may take 2 hours depending on your internet speed.

Please make sure to only DOWNLOAD the MacOS installation file and keep it in your Applications folder. Do NOT continue with the installation process. Creating the Bootable Installer requires the downloadable file of the MacOS Installer.

3. The complete Terminal Command is located at the bottom of the Support Document in the  "Learn More" section.

When prompted, type your administrator password and press Return again. Terminal doesn't show any characters as you type your password.

You will need to modify the  flash drive name in terminal command (ie. modify /Volumes/MyVolume in the terminal command to your flash drive name).  You can find the name of your flashdrive in Finder.

Example of  sudo command to Monterey:

sudo /Applications/Install \ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia -- /Volumes/my drive

Note: where <my drive> is the name of your flash drive.

Terminal will ask you to proceed with erasing your volume.

Please make sure you are okay with having your portable drive erased. This means all documents and files on it will be wiped so that the new MacOS installation file will replace it.

If you have important documents on this portable drive you are using, please transfer or backup those important files to another portable drive/google drive.

Type "Y" into terminal to proceed with Terminal erasing the contents on your portable drive volume. Creating a bootable disk with the terminal command can take about 5-10 minutes.

After you receive this message (image below) in Terminal, you have successfully created a bootable installer!
