Setting up a VM eBook on your desktop

This article describes the process for installing the virtual eBook machine to your desktop.  Currently only CC1 and CCA are available.

1. Find the shared folder: Virtual Machine eBooks

WARNING: Before starting check to see if you have at least 30G of free space on your computer. The zip alone is 6.5 gigs before it is even extracted.

  • Download both files.  Ignore any warning.
  • The .tar file takes a long time to download.
  • Create a new folder in your hard drive naming it something like: eBooks  Demo - CC1 & CCA
  • Add the two downloaded files to that folder.

2. Extract EbooksDemo.tar.bz2.

  • Double click the 'EbooksDemo.tar.bz2.  
  • You will get a folder called, "Ebooks Demo".

3. PART 1: Install Virtual Box

  • Double click the Virtualbox-5.2.6-120293-OSX.dmg shown in the image above.
  • A progress bar will show while it is opening on your drive.
  • Then double click the 'cardboard box' icon  shown in '1' below.
  • Click 'Continue' shown in '2' below.

4. Run the installer.

  • Make sure you have over 200 MB of space on your computer.
  • Click through the prompts.
  • If you want to change the location of the VM eBook, you can do so from the second screen below.

5. (Skip this step if no error came up) If you were blocked, complete this step.

  1. Open the Security Preferences.
  2. Click 'Allow'.
  3. You should have a successful installation and close.

6. PART 2: Run the VirtualBox application.

  1. Click the applications folder and find 'Virtualbox.app' (Note: The 'app' extension may be hidden on your computer.)
  2. Double click it.

7. Follow steps to install.

8. Follow these steps after clicking the folder icon above.

  1. Clicking the folder icon taking you to the original folder you created in step 1 at the top.
  2. Double click the 'Ebooks Demo' folder.
  3. Double click the file called 'Ebooks Demo.vdi'.
  4. Then click the last radial button, "Use an existing Virtual Hard Disk file."
  5. The 'Ebooks Demo.vdi' should now show in the field.

9. Congratulations! You can now run your eBook Demo.
