Jira: Release Plan and Release

This tutorial provides step by step instructions to create a new release plan and release from existing ones.

How to create a new Release

  1. From Jira, select Releases from the side menu to access Releases.
  1. Select Create version to create a new Release.
  2. Name the Release as "Release for <Project Name> v.<Date>".  The day can be indicated as "XX" if the date has not yet been decided.
  3. Copy the Name to the Description.
  4. Save.

How to create a new Release Plan

  1. From the dropdown menu select Released and Unreleased to access a complete list of Releases.
  2. Choose a release that is similar to the new one that is needed
  1. From the list of issues associated with the release choose the Release plan.
  1. In the Release Plan issue choose the three dots to open the dropdown menu and select clone

Edit the new Release Plan

On the new Release Plan (this will be named as a clone of the original Release Plan <Clone - Release Plan>) edit all the fields as appropriate for the new Release Plan.

  1. Check the title and Description for the correct name and date.
  2. Replace the URL with the new Release.
  3. Check that all the deployments are listed in the table. (Verify with developers)
  4. Update the Fix version to the new Release.
  5. Add the Sprint
  6. Check that all needed sub-tasks are included and named correctly. "Clone" will need to be removed from cloned subtasks. Be sure to include scripts if needed. (Verify with developers)
